Jeremy Boyle

For this exhibition JEREMY BOYLE will be presenting a group of manipulated and constructed musical instruments. An electric guitar, a drum set, and a marimba-like instrument have been technologically altered to play on their own via laptop, void of direct human interaction. Boyle’s interest and research is rooted in what happens when the output of sound shifts from the visible movement of the body and muscles to a more of a cerebral exercise, often focusing on the laptop performer as an example.

Boyle’s work approaches a broader analysis of the analog (visible) versus the digital (invisible) in the context of our contemporary culture, embracing that experience in terms of the visual is no longer able to explain our existence and a shift in understanding contemporary experience is necessary. The ways in which the shift from a mechanical-analog to a technological-digital culture is significant in evaluating our current social condition is central to his framework.

Also included in this exhibition are two video installations that explore rotations and circular motions, Spirograph woodcuts produced by a mechanical spirograph and router attachment, and a manipulated extension cord that is pictured below.
