All Eyez On Me:
Justin Schaefer

All Eyez On Me is the first official exhibition of Booster and Seven’s spring 2006 season. Justin Schaefer will be showing the results of a project that circumvents the gestural notions of portraiture.

A central component to this exhibition is a collection of portraits, which Schaefer requested from both Chicago based artists and non-artists, familiar and non-familiar sources. Schaefer’s interest in the range of perception and how it can manifest itself during the creation of a portrait has been integral to his project. In an attempt to amass a dynamic range of portrait studies, Schaefer went to a variety of sources. One example is a collaboration with artist Caleb Lyons at an all girls’ catholic school, where Schaefer posed as a figure in a drawing class with the intention of including a selection of their drawings in his exhibition. The final overall collection of portraits, realized through a variety of approaches and media, will be presented in the exhibition as a component of his new body of work and as an integral part of his current practice. Also on view are four new abstract paintings. Personal family photographs are also presented and maintain a referential relationship with the paintings.
