Kaleidoscopic:
Amy Mayfield + Andrea Meyers

Kaleidoscopic highlights Mayfield and Myers shared inclination toward an exploration of change, ambiguity, the whimsical and the sensational.  The works hover between nonsensical and practical worlds in the telling of their skewed and reconfigured narratives.

AMY MAYFIELD creates paintings in an innocent manner that have a fairy tale-like darkness lurking just beneath the surface.  These surreal worlds are dotted with weird furry membranes, mythical creatures, puppies, poisonous mushrooms, and unmentionables.  Intricate line-work executed in black ink finds its place in her generously candy-colored landscapes. The objects and characters in her paintings derive from past surveys and documentations that the artist has collected in her daily activities and observations.

ANDREA MEYERS recent sculptures address the uncontrollability of nature and echo the pressure of etiquette we endure in day to day interactions.  Her sculptures, mostly constructed out of paper and fabric, evoke a perpetual activeness and an eruption against an imposed containment.  She emphasizes the malleability and vulnerability of the materials she works with and the formal qualities of color, materiality, construction, and deconstruction.  Myers anticipates multiple interpretations of her work and revels in the ambiguity that organic forms can posess.
